Appointment as Assistant Musical Director

I'm excited to share that I have been appointed as the Assistant Musical Director for SimplySinging Choir in Brigg. I look forward to working with this fantastic choir, and learning along with them.

I'm delighted to be joined by some amazing musicians as a part of this concert.

First, is Sophie Poole.

Sophie is an expressive opera singer who performs all over England from
Darlington to Chelmsford. She enjoys performing as well as taking part in masterclasses and summer courses like Melofonetica.

What a truly fantastic experience performing Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn yesterday at Lincoln Cathedral!

Having the opportunity to sing this monumental work with a full orchestra alongside three choirs (Lincoln Choral Society, Scunthorpe and District Choral Society & Bingham & District Choral Society) was nothing short of exhilarating.

The scale, drama, and richness of Mendelssohn’s writing make Elijah an incredibly powerful piece to be part of, and sharing it with such a large and committed group of musicians created a truly unforgettable performance.

A huge thank you to everyone involved!

A few weeks ago, I had the great honour of conducting a choir at a Thanksgiving Ceremony at Newcastle University, held in recognition of those who so generously chose to donate their bodies to medical science.

It was a deeply moving and humbling occasion, bringing together students, staff, and the families of donors in a shared moment of remembrance and gratitude.

It is difficult to fully express the significance of such generosity of those who gave their bodies, but it was a privilege to contribute, in a small way, to a ceremony that honours lives with such dignity and care.

Over the past few months, I’ve been leading a practice-based research project exploring how Tudor polyphony can be taught in secondary schools through historically informed performance.

Working with students aged 11–18, we’ve used part-book singing and early notation to recreate elements of sixteenth-century music-making. What’s been striking is how quickly students moved from seeing the music as “difficult” to experiencing it as collaborative and accessible, developing independence, listening, and ensemble awareness.

This forms part of my dissertation, investigating how historically informed performance can function as an effective and engaging pedagogical tool.

It’s been a genuinely rewarding process so far, and I’m excited to see how the next stage of the project develops.

Every year has been a joy, filled with inspiring music-making, laughter, and the best company.

One of my favourite things is catching up with friends, old and new, each summer. This week has been no exception with so many wonderful memories made!

It’s been incredible to see what these amazing young musicians can achieve, their performances are created by them, and they guide us through their music with such confidence, creativity, and heart. The are truly inspiring.

As I come to the end of my first semester at Dalhousie University, I find myself at the start the of performance time.

I am immensely grateful to have collaborated with such exceptional individuals and to have are an integral part of this community.

I can’t wait to play Le Prince Charmant in this week’s production of Cendrillon, which will be performed from Thursday to Sunday. I will have the privilege of portraying this charming character on both Thursday and Saturday evenings.

Furthermore, I am delighted to contribute to DalChorus’s upcoming Shadow and Light Concert, where I will have the extraordinary opportunity to conduct the choir in Tallis’s renowned ‘O Nata Lux’.

Despite the conclusion of the semester being just around the corner, a few weeks of amazing performances awaits me, and I can’t wait the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

This summer I am touring with a group presenting a new play, ‘Paradise Lost’ (words by John Milton and Ian Sharp, music by Tim Sutton)

The show brings Milton's classic poem to life for contemporary audiences. We have extracted the most dramatic elements of Milton's work, as powerful as the best of Shakespeare, and added our own scenes. The play is a 21st century, and often comic, take on the ancient story of Adam and Eve and Satan. Milton's themes are more relevant than ever to our own age. Adam and Eve lost Paradise; are we about to do the same?

The dates are:
June 5th – The Haven, Market Rasen – 2 performances,
Matinee and evening
June 25th – Thorington Outdoor Theatre, Suffolk – 2 performances, Matinee and evening.
July 3rd – Baysgarth Park, Barton upon Humber – Shakespeare Festival – afternoon performance
July 9th – Broadbent Theatre, Halton Hall, Wragby – 2 performances, Matinee and evening.
July 10th – Epworth Rectory, Isle of Axholme – afternoon performance
July 16th Harpswell Gardens nr Lincoln – afternoon performance, possibly evening
July 17th – Scunthorpe Town Centre (Library & Art Gallery, under discussion TBC
